Biogas Plant Construction in India
A biogas plant, also known as a gobar gas plant, is a facility that utilizes biogas services to convert waste, such as dung or other organic matter, to cooker fuel or electricity and to produce compressed biogas (CBG). The end product of biogas production is organic manure. Setting up biogas plants in India consists of many steps that include getting the necessary permits, constructing the digester, and finally installing the biogas plant. Corpseed Consulting has the necessary experience and can help construct biogas plants at different locations.
Importance of Biogas Plants in India
From an economic standpoint, setting up a biogas plant comes with a number of incentives. Biogas and CBG have a fixed price, and there is a compulsory CBG purchase and a mandatory blending of CBG with natural gas. The Cabinet of India, under the GOBARdhan scheme, also allotted a large sum of money for the development of the biogas sector. The scheme will run for 10 years, and during that time, CBG blending will increase. The scheme ensures that CBG will have a stable and growing market.
In addition, small biogas plants (1-25 cubic metres/day) are supported by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy under Swachh Bharat Mission, Gramin (Phase II). Support for plant construction is given at the district level up to ₹50 lakh for community/cluster plants. Support is enhanced by 20% for North Eastern and island areas, and for Gaushalas/SC/ST beneficiaries. Market Development Assistance at the rate of ₹1,500 per tonne of Organic Manure is provided once the plant starts producing Organic Manure, which conform to the Fertilizer Control Order. Larger beneficiaries of this fund can also avail of the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund, whereby the interest subsidy on loans up to ₹2 crore, is charged at 3% By all means, makes this the right time for the biogas plant initiative.
How a Biogas Plant Works
A biogas plant is made up of various components which include mixing tank, inlet, digester, gas holder/dome, and outlet for liquid. Organic wastes are fed into the digester where bacteria release biogas in an oxygen free condition and leave behind the liquid which is called 'slurry' and is used as manure. The two designs of biogas plants are fixed dome and floating drum designs. The larger biogas plants include purification, compression and bottling units.
Constructing a Biogas Plant
Prior to starting the construction of a biogas plant, the energy requirements of the plant must be determined. The feedstock for the biogas plant must be readily available. The site where the biogas plant is to be constructed must have access to water. Once these have been determined, the design and size of the biogas plant is determined. The biogas plant is then constructed.
Regulatory Approvals: Obtain licenses under state and central government schemes. Also, register on the GOBARdhan portal, if required.
Civil Construction: Excavation and masonery work for construction of digesters and gas-holders, as per required specifications.
Equipment Installation: Piping and associated fittings, gas valves and regulators, and purification and compression units for CBG plants.
Testing: Leak and gas quality tests.
Trial Operation: Feed in biomass for operation.
Support Services: Guide for Operation and Maintenance of the plant. Help in availing subsidy. Market biogas and/or manure.
Cost of Biogas Plants in India
The price of biogas plants varies with capacity. A small household plant can be purchased for less than Rs. 50,000/- ( USD 830). Large scale CBG plants, which also require larger infrastructure for digester, purification and compression, would cost several Crores (i.e., millions of Rupees). Financial assistance in the form of subsidized loans and grants from the government reduce the effective cost to the project promoter.
Choosing an Appropriate Biogas Plant Manufacturing Company
A reliable biogas plant manufacturing company should provide biogas plants and /or CBG plants and also render services, including registration and subsidy assistance, and Operation and Maintenance services post installation. As of date, 1,215 CBG plants and 1,750 biogas plants have been registered on GOBARdhan portal.
Corpseed undertakes the entire process of setting up a biogas plant in India, from site assessment to design, construction, acquisition of plant machinery, permits and plant registration, and subsidy documentation for gobar gas plants, community biogas plants, and CBG projects.
What do you want to know about biogas?
What is the difference between a biogas plant and a gobar gas plant?
Biogas plants and gobar gas plants are the same types of plants. Biogas plants can be built from cattle dung or other types of things. "Gobar gas plant" means that the plant is built from cattle dung.
What is the process of building a biogas plant like?
Building a small biogas plant for a family can take a month, and a larger biogas plant for a community can take a year because of the civil and building construction work, as well as the procurement of required equipment.
Is it true that the Indian government offers a subsidy for building biogas plants?
Yes. The Central and State governments have various welfare schemes, including Swachh Bharat, and GOBARdhan, in which the government offers financial assistance and subsidies for building biogas plants and CBG plants.
What are the machinery and equipment for a biogas plant?
For a CBG plant, the equipment can include gas purification and compression equipment, along with other equipment for storing the gas.
